This year Windows 7 will celebrate its 10th birthday. While ten years is a great birthday to celebrate if you’re a business, in technology you might as well throw a retirement party. That’s what Microsoft is doing, announcing it will end support for Windows 7.
What does that mean for businesses still running on Windows 7? Here are a few things you need to know:
1. Microsoft will no longer provide security updates or support for PCs running Windows 7 after January 2020. That means your systems will be at risk of bugs and viruses.
2. You can pay for extended support, but you’re only buying a few years. The Extended Security Updates for Windows 7 will stop in 2023.
3. There is still time to update to Windows 10 before the January 2020 deadline.
If you feel like you must be the last business to upgrade, you’re not. More than 30 percent of Windows users are still running Windows 7 according to StatCounter. The obvious question after that statistic is why should I upgrade if all these other businesses are not? Well, that 30 percent number is dropping, and fast. Also, remember that you’re using 10-year-old technology and there are significant improvements now available. You can read more details in a previous post.
How can I upgrade to Windows 10 quickly and smoothly?
The first thing to remember is, for businesses, migrating takes a lot more than an overnight upgrade. It involves testing to ensure all of your other systems and applications are supported appropriately on Windows 10. You also need to make sure you secure data and profiles to ensure minimal impact on users and your business.
To achieve this, you need a partner that can build the right plan for your enterprise, test it, and then deploy updates in both an appropriate and timely manner. Before you pick a partner, make sure they have Microsoft experience. Expertise will ensure a successful Windows 10 transition.
