As technology advances, people’s privacy is more at stake. As a result, organizations, both in the public and private sector, must take the necessary precautions to ensure that people’s personal information is protected by making digital ethics and privacy a top priority.
People these days are more selective about who and where they distribute their personal information to. Misuse of personal information can cause major backlash with organizations, leading to mistrust from customers and employees. To maintain trust, companies must use personal information reasonably, responsibility and appropriately.
“Trust is the acceptance of the truth of a statement without evidence or investigation. Ultimately an organization’s position on privacy must be driven by its broader position on ethics and trust. Shifting from privacy to ethics moves the conversation beyond ‘are we compliant’ toward ‘are we doing the right thing,’” said David Cearley, vice president and Gartner Fellow.
