Digital Transformation In The Automotive Industry

Nearly 60 years ago, “The Jetsons” introduced us to the flying car. This seemed merely like a fantasy until recent years when talks of the autonomous vehicle took over. Little did folks know that what seemed like complete nonsense at the time would become a reality.

The cars of the future may not look like the flying spacecraft we saw in “The Jetsons.” But the autonomous feature will be enough to disrupt the entire industry for years to come. Roads around the world will look drastically different as self-driving cars take people from one destination to the next.

As a result, car ownership will drop significantly, according to an NBC article. People will appreciate the cost efficiency and overall convenience of transporting with self-driving cars. Also, with improved city infrastructure and safer roads, living in the suburbs may become a thing of the past.

Furthermore, driverless cars will cause city infrastructure to evolve, which will ensure the safety of passengers and pedestrians. This is something that human-driven cars fell short of. According to a National Association of City Transportation Officials report, “streets could be narrower, with more space set aside for pedestrians and cyclists.”

Even intersections will become safer, and better use of space could be made possible when vehicles spend more time on the road and less time in parking lots and structures. As a result of better city infrastructure, people may actually consider leaving the suburbs and relocate to the city. But due to the conveniences of driverless cars such as cost and time efficiency, people may move farther away.

Autonomous vehicles will change the world, making the impossible become, well possible. For instance, can you imagine not having to drive to the store to pick out and try on clothes? How about getting up at 5 a.m. to go to the gym? According to Dr. Chris Gerdes, director of the Center for Automotive Research at Stanford University, this could all be made possible when businesses send driverless vans and trucks to the driveways of customers to deliver goods and services.

The automotive industry has gone through many significant changes, but this upcoming revolution may be the most impactful. To say the world will change is an understatement.

When cars start flying, you may feel like you’re in an episode of “The Jetsons.” You may even feel like you’re in “The Twilight Zone” as traffic clears dramatically and parking lots become obsolete. The revolution is coming sooner rather than later, so it’s best to start preparing for change now.
