How Technology Enhanced Education With Digital Learning

There’s never been a better time for learning than in the digital age, with emerging technologies making information more easily accessible to students and teachers. With attention spans running short nowadays, it’s easy for students to lose focus during boring, traditional chalkboard lectures. Therefore, it makes sense for schools to incorporate technology into classrooms, considering this generation of students utilize it on a daily basis. That’s why more and more schools are going the digital route; not only is it preferred by students, but it also enhances the learning experience.

One way that digital learning is enriching the education sector is the personalization that it offers. This is beneficial considering that every student learns at a different pace and will no longer feel pressure to keep up with their peers. A Forbes article highlighted personalized learning as one of the digital transformation trends in education, with an example being blended learning, which “gives more responsibility to the student as it involves less direct instruction from the teacher and more discovery-based methods of learning,” allowing students to “control certain elements of their learning by making decisions about things like where and at what pace they move through material.” Likewise, adaptive learning gives students the flexibility they need to move at their own pace and also “collects information about student behavior as they’re answering questions, and then subsequently uses that information to provide instant feedback in order to adjust the learning experience accordingly” (Newman, 2017).

Another digital transformation trend mentioned by Forbes that’s improving education is the use of advanced technologies, such as augmented, virtual, and mixed reality. These technologies can create a more fun learning environment, giving students the opportunity to collaborate and interact with people across the globe. According to the article, “apps such as Unimersiv can transport students to ancient Greece, while Cospaces allows students to share their virtual creations with the world.” Additionally, artificial intelligence has been widely used, especially in higher education. Today’s students have the luxury of 24-hour virtual advisory services, as well as chatbots, which “have the human capability” to assist with homework and complicated paperwork (Newman, 2017).

Finally, the use of digital tools in the classroom benefits teachers, the backbone of every classroom. According to a 2013 PBS LearningMedia study, “74% of teachers agree that technology allows them to reinforce their lessons” (Mata, 2015). In the digital age, teachers can more easily connect with students and attend to their unique needs. Fortunately, teachers are starting to recognize the benefits of utilizing technology in the classroom, and student engagement and work performance are improving significantly.

With all the benefits that digital learning provides, it’s understandable why old methods are being replaced so rapidly. Once technology takes over an industry, there’s no turning back, and education is no exception. Therefore, digital tools must be fully optimized in the classroom in order for today’s students to continue to flourish.
