The Development of a Complex CMMS System - Stefanini

The Development Of A Complex CMMS System

The Manufacturing & Transportation Solutions team at Stefanini is responsible for the implementation of maintenance systems in the railway and metro sectors, commonly known as CMMS (Computerized Maintenance Management System). We have over 10 years of experience in metro and railway maintenance.

Maintaining complex systems like metro networks involves the development and configuration of a CMMS combined with an EAM (Enterprise Asset Management) system and IoT systems to create an MMIS (Maintenance Management Information System) solution.

Railway maintenance systems are crucial for achieving the reliability and safety objectives required by current regulations. Railway systems must always be in optimal operating condition, so regular maintenance is essential to achieve this goal.

Metros are complex systems, with hundreds of parts, called assets, that must be regularly maintained. However, maintenance doesn’t just mean repairing assets when they fail; it requires regular practices to keep resources and equipment in perfect condition at all times.

Benefits of the CMMS System in the Railway Sector

The Benefits of a Complex CMMS System in the Railway Sector

Therefore, in managing the safety of the railway system, we talk about:

  • Preventive Maintenance

Periodic inspection with the goal of “noticing small problems and fixing them before they become significant issues.” Ideally, “nothing should break.”

  • Predictive Maintenance

Maintenance activities carried out to address problems in advance.

  • Corrective Maintenance

Resource optimization for managing maintenance interventions.

  • Automatic Creation of Work Orders

By directly interfacing with field systems, anomalies and measurements are automatically detected to create maintenance requests automatically.

The software system keeps track of maintenance and informs when the next one is needed, preventing failures that could cause injuries.

Stefanini’s Role in Maintenance Management

In the development of a complex CMMS system, the project phases we undertake are:

  • Project design specifications
  • Specifications and interface software to and from railway systems
  • Project documentation
  • Extensive collection of maintenance data to create the “asset consistency”
  • Data consistency verification
  • Data loading into the CMMS system
  • Configuration of rules for the creation of automatic work orders for:
    • Corrective Maintenance in response to failures
    • Preventive Maintenance based on measurement thresholds, such as kilometers traveled by the train or hours of use

Some of our projects include metro and railway systems such as:

  • Rome Metro
  • Abu Dhabi Metro (UAE)
  • Riyadh Metro (SA)
  • Honolulu Metro (USA)

The Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) systems that we use with our certified personnel to develop solutions are: Carl Berger-Levrault – Carl-Source © and IBM – Maximo Application Suite ©.

In conclusion, our dedication to quality and safety enables us to successfully tackle the challenges of railway maintenance. With Stefanini, maintenance solutions are not just a promise, but a proven reality.
