The Meaning Of Vehicle Homologation
When it comes to homologation, it turns out that that the term can be used to certify the unification of objects that were previously different from one another. However, homologation also defines the status of a product when it meets certain technical specifications related to production standard documents or included in certain regulations.
Automotive Homologation
In the case of vehicle homologation or even special vehicles, this is the procedure by which a competent authority can declare and certify that a vehicle and its systems and components comply with the legislation that requires the correct administrative provisions and the proper technical requirements. In this case, homologation is a validation certified by an entity that is normally a government body, but can also be a certification body belonging to a private company (nevertheless accredited by a government body).
Each type of vehicle is therefore identified by an alphanumeric code called homologation number, which uniquely identifies all the technical data of the vehicle in question, with the main ones being listed below:
- Engine type
- Number of seats
- Type of bodywork
- All characteristic dimensions
- Type of tires
- Weight
Other specific data is also specified in the vehicle registration document.
Homologation And Regulations
To register a road-going vehicle, it is necessary and compulsory for its homologation to correspond to the current regulatory requirements of the code relating to the application for registration. When a vehicle is registered, it receives its registration code, which is the most important technical reference code, since it identifies all the technical characteristics of said vehicle. This code is specified in the vehicle’s original documentation, called certificate of origin or declaration of conformity, but also in the registration documents (registration certificate, more simply called “registration” or specific certificate of technical fitness). The code also appears on a special plate attached to the vehicle’s body.
Types Of Vehicle Homologation
There are two different types of vehicle homologation. The first is national homologation, which is required, as the term implies, by the country of origin and, therefore, only valid in that country and sometimes even for a limited time. The second is Community homologation that, instead of a single nation, is valid for every country in the European Community and certifies that the vehicle meets the provisions and technical-administrative requirements provided for by European Community regulations.
The vehicle manufacturer can therefore issue a European Community certificate of conformity, also known as COC, to the purchaser. To summarize from a regulatory point of view, homologation is therefore defined as the procedure whereby a Member State certifies that a vehicle type, system, component or any other technical unit complies with the relevant technical requirements and the applicable national provisions in force.
Advantages Of The WVTA System: Versatility And Implementation Over Time
The WVTA system has been in use for about 15 years. Its modular structure and the expertise with which it was written and implemented made it possible to create a software platform that can be adapted to changes in the continuously evolving regulations. If the regulations change, the software is implemented and evolves accordingly, maintaining and ensuring its performance towards the user.
Due to its versatility, the WVTA system can be adapted to the different needs of manufacturers and to different products that have to comply with particular regulations and technical specifications. The continuous product releases make it reliable and a provider of competitive advantages on the market for users, thanks to continuous maintenance and careful evolution that render it customizable and high-performance.
