In the 21st century, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who didn’t utilize technology on a daily basis. It seems nearly impossible to navigate life without a smart device, or to even remember a time when we functioned without one. With merely one touch of a button, the world is right at our fingertips, making any and all information accessible to us. With technology changing so rapidly, we are finding that all aspects of our lives are being impacted; from the way we communicate to our productivity in the workplace. Whether technology has changed our lives for the better is still debatable for some, but it’s hard to deny the ease that it has brought us; all within less than a quarter of a century.
Let’s take a trip down memory lane and reflect on the world before the technological revolution. No text messages, email, or social media meant sending letters that would take days or weeks for the recipient to receive. Nowadays, we can enjoy the immediacy of communication, taking just a few seconds for our messages to get to the recipient. Furthermore, the power of social media keeps us all in the loop of what’s happening in the world around us, no matter where we are. According to a 2017 Pew Research Center Study survey, “about two-thirds of American adults are getting ‘at least some of their news on social media’ with two-in-ten doing so often.”
Technological advances have also improved the way we travel, eliminating unnecessary stressors that used to make our traveling experiences somewhat dreadful. With mobile check-ins, we no longer have to wait in line to check into a hotel, and e-tickets provide us with the convenience and security of not losing or forgetting them at home, making for an eco-friendlier environment in the long run. In the workplace, we are more productive than ever. Going back to communication, technology has made it easier for employees to share information and ideas with one another. Moreover, it allows employees to be more creative and innovative, benefiting the entire company. Additionally, disruptive technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) will lead to future job creation since machines can’t function on their own. This eliminates the fear of unemployment.
It’s easy to feel a bit overwhelmed in the ever-changing world of technology, but it’s only to our advantage that we stay current in the latest advancements to better our world. Remember: The key is to embrace technology, not be afraid.
